A word from SO FAR SO GOOD
The work of Nina Rougerie is immersive, every photograph, an opportunity to step into a new world, each still, almost a glimpse into a different film. Purely magical, from her portraiture to landscapes, Nina is a photographer whose work we look forward to seeing in galleries worldwide.
My name is Nina Rougerie, I am 26 six years old, I'm from Lyon in France but I currently live in Canada.
I would say I'm a contemplative person: I like to look around me and take a photo - multiples times, until I got the perfect angle,  at the perfect time with the perfect elements. But that’s alright. I don’t see photography as a way of fixing memories. For me, photography doesn’t aim to represent the real world, but to imagine the outlines of another.
A few months ago, I realised I had kind of a capitalist way of doing photography: that's why I started to try film cameras. Camera rolls are expensive, so you better choose wisely the shot you want to take. Plus, you have no idea of what it’s going to look like: once taken, it’s taken, move on! Using a film camera teaches me how to be patient, to enjoy the moment I’m capturing more, but also to be more confident in my practice: when I press the button, it’s because I thought about all the possibilities of what my picture is going to look like, and I’m sure of my shot. I mean, sure… until I see the result!
I love contrasts and I love to play with luminosity - I often like my pictures to be under exposed. I would like my photography approach to be more meaningful, more staged, and I’m trying to take portraits of people and myself - but I’m still experimenting with it.
